Gluten free dieters may have met their match with ACME Bread Company. Established in 1983, this bakery uses only organic ingredients for their quality breads. Supplying to restaurants like Chez Panisse, ACME knows how make the best bread. Period.
My mother, sister, and I first stopped in Berkeley to grab a quick bite at Bartavelle to fuel up for the long day ahead. This cute cafe sits directly next to ACME's first location. They serve all their delicious sandwiches, toasts, and crostinis using ACME bread for carbohydrate perfection.
My sister and I dressed warmly for the dreary day in the east bay. Notice the adorable stringing lights and brick wall? It had a very "Brooklyn" type feel to the place.

We ordered the kale and ricotta sandwich complete with arugula and preserved lemon-shallot vinaigrette. We also split a persimmon and ricotta toast and crostini.
After we toured around Berkeley, our next stop was Temescal, an up-and-coming neighborhood in Oakland. We took a break at Blue Bottle Coffee in the historic W.C. Morse building. Then we shopped in the Temescal Alley right off of Telegraph. There are tons of unique boutiques, cafes, and even a barbershop. Although Esqueleto had to be my favorite. I had to pull myself out of there before I bought all the designer jewelry and interesting prints. If you find yourself in Temescal, make sure to pop in the alley and go explore.
